For virtually the first time in this years Wales Carp Masters, the sun made a welcome appearance for the final weekend from 29th to 31st August. With the stunning specimen lake (Elysium) at Celtic Lakes Resort bathed in Sunshine, 12 pairs of carp anglers descended on the venue with only one thought in mind ... to be crowned Wales Carp Masters Champions for 2008.
Six qualifying heats had taken place at Celtic Lakes Resort near Lampeter, West Wales, with the top two placed pairs from each heat winning through to the final.
After a close battle it was Lee Botchett and James Willatts who took the title and the £10,000 worth of tackle vouchers first prize with 92lb 2oz. With only an hour to go there was only 10lb of fish separating the first 4 teams which lead to an interesting and frantic last hour of fishing. Despite this they held on to be crowned Wales Carp Masters Champions for 2008.
In second place were Team A from Mega Baits, Justin Hooper & John Kurle, who recorded a weight of 85lb 8oz from peg 12. Their excellent finish was slightly disappointing as they hooked a fish just before the hooter sounded, only to lose it minutes later. Would this have won them the title - we will never know !! Still I'm sure the £5,000 worth of tackle vouchers for second place will ease their pain a little.
Only a further 3lb behind in third place were Paul Hatton & Ian Carter representing Team Sunbeam who finished on 82lb 10oz on peg 10. They walk away with £3,000 of tackle vouchers.
Like last years event, the 2008 Wales Carp Masters final was being filmed and will be shown on Sky Sports on October. (Please check back here soon as we will be publishing the screening date as soon as it is known). Thanks go to Steve and his team from Blue Tuna for filming the final - we can't wait to see the results.
This years event wouldn't have been possible without our fantastic sponsors. Pure Fishing (our main sponsor) provided the main prizes with additional items of tackle and bait being provided by Crafty Carper, Carpworld and Sticky Baits. Our huge and sincere thanks go to all of them. Thanks also to Angling4business.com who created and maintained our website.

An emotional and tired John Carney (who heads the 2008 Wales Carp Masters team) had this to say about the final weekend:
"Once again the Wales Carp Masters has proved a huge success as an angling competition in its own right but also in helping to promote fishing and tourism in Wales. The event wouldn't have been possible without the support of everyone involved including the team at Celtic Lakes, the marshals, the sponsors, the anglers and of course my wonderful wife Tracy for her support over the last 3 months. We are already in discussions with sponsors and venues for next years event and would love to hear from any business who would like to participate as a sponsor or as a qualifying venue".
Congratulations to all the anglers who took part in this years Wales Carp Masters. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2009.
Well, that's it for 2008, but we won't be resting for long. We are already starting to plan the 2009 event and are already in discussion with a number of sponsors and venues. If you would like to discuss getting involved in the 2009 event, please send us a message by clicking here >>
