The final match of this years winter league was held at Celtic Lakes Resort in Lampeter. Sixteen anglers took part and today either Nick Williams or John Charlesworth would become winter league champion and the battle for third place resolved also. Nick who was trailing John by one point at the start of the match stormed into an early lead landing carp to 10lb in the first hour on lake 4, with junior Welsh Internation Ryan Hughes also catching well. Meanwhile on lake 5 (Churchill), which was favourite to produce the winners today things were not going well and the favoured pegs not producing many fish at all.
As the match progressed and word came along the bank that Churchill had'nt fished it looked likely that lake 4 would take the top 3 places and make the series overall result very close indeed, in fact the closest finish to any Fish4Wales series so far. Nick Williams won the match with 60lb 6oz of pole caught carp to 10lbs, Ryan Hughes was 2nd with 44lb 10oz and Keith Branigan on Lake 5 was 3rd with 22lb. Both Nick Williams and John Charlesworth ended the series on 14 points but on weight countback John came out top by just 10lb with 134lb 15oz to Nicks 124lb 15oz. Congratulations to John winning his first trophy with Fish4Wales and becoming Fish4Wales Winter League Champion 2008. Third place was eventually won by Keith Fellowes finishing on 22 points. The biggest fish prize was won by Mark Henness of Fast Forward Distribution the series sponsor.
With this being the first series of the 2008 season it's no suprise that John and Nick are also leading the championship both on 109 points but with that same 10lb separating the anglers. Third place going to Junior Welsh International Ryan Hughes fishing his year in the senior division.
I'd like to thank Mark for all his support and wish him well in his new life in New Zealand, I know that he will be keeping touch and looking in on the forum from time to time.
Todays biggest fish was caught by the Celtic Cup Sponsor Mark Henness with a 12lb common carp.
