Fast Forward - Palletline Cup - Sunday 21st October 2007 Celtic Lakes Resort
Churchill Lake, Draw 9.30am, Fished 10.30am - 3.30pm
Today saw the long awaited first match at Celtic Lakes sponsored by Mark Henness of Fast Forward Distribution & Palletline. 16 anglers were booked in and eagerly awaited my arrival at the lake this morning as I was running a bit late getting to the complex at 9.06am, six mins after the draw time.
By the time the draw for the pairs was made and then the main draw it was 9.30am so we decided to fish from 10.30am to 3.30pm. I drew unlucky for some peg 13, but it proved unlucky for all but two other anglers as I managed to land carp to 11lb for a total weight of 42lb and 3rd place overall.
Kev Williams visiting us from North Wales set the pace with 27 carp and some skimmer bream for a match winning 103lb 10oz and winning the pairs trophy single handed without his partner John Charlesworth bothering the scoreboard.
The carp today seemed to be all congregated at the far end of the lake with Kev, Calvin, Peter, Paul & Mark all getting amongst the fish at regular intervals. That end of the lake seeing protection from the wind by the trees. The other end and the side of the lake I was pegged out on was a very different story with bites very hard to come by and we all took a battering by the wind.
Terry on the peg to my left managed to capture one carp weighing in at 10lb and Ryan, two pegs to my right was also getting a few carp and the best junior weight on the day with 23lb 14oz, whilst Brian on the peg in between us struggled to catch many fish at all.
All along the top end of the lake pegs 17, 1, 2, 3 & 4 having the wind straight in their faces struggled to catch with welsh international angler and my pairs partner Martin Churchill the only one to land over 10lb.
To end the match in typical 'Nick Style' I managed (not for the 1st time either) to hook a lump on the whistle and managed to land it just inside the allowed 15min playing time, and you can guess it tipped the scales at 11lb 14oz winning me the biggest fish prize on the day, although it was not needed to secure my 3rd place overall.
To sum up, a brilliant day on a new fishery to most of us at F4W. The owner John was very approachable and helpful, his fishery being well stocked with the fish in excellent condition. They fought very hard and it was a pleasure to catch and land them. I will very much be looking forward to returning there and running future matches. The cost of the day ticket had always put me off in the past, and although the landscape and vegetation needs a few years to mature yet Celtic Lakes is an excellent fishery with much potential. I'm sure it will become very popular with the match anglers once they have experienced it for themselves.
